Assessment Matters
At Farrer Park Primary School, assessment is integrated into the teaching and learning process. Teachers use information gathered through formative and summative assessments to monitor students’ learning and achievement of the intended learning outcomes. School-based formal assessments comprise Weighted Assessments (WAs) and End-of-Year Examinations (EYEs).
There is no WA or EYE in Primary 1 and Primary 2. Formal assessments are introduced gradually from Primary 3 to allow students time to adapt progressively to the increased learning expectations.
Primary 3 to 5 students participate in bite-sized WAs in Terms 1, 2, and 3, and sit for EYEs in Term 4. Primary 6 students follow a different pattern, sitting for a WA in Term 2 and the Preliminary Examination (Prelims) in Term 3, before taking the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) in Term 4.
Assessment Weightings
Students’ overall results for a subject in the year will be computed from their WAs and EYEs scores. The weighting for each assessment reflects the differences in scope and demand expected of students at different stages of their learning.
Assessment Weightings
Levels | Term 1 | Term 2 | Term 3 | Term 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Primary 3 to Primary 5 | WA (10%) | WA (15%) | WA (15%) | EYE (60%) |
Primary 6 | WA (30%) | Prelims (70%) |
Grading Schemes
For Primary 1 and 2, subject-specific learning outcomes and a common set of qualitative descriptors are used to report students’ learning progress at the end of each semester. The QDs describe students’ attainment levels in specific LOs: Beginning, Developing, Competent, and Accomplished.
